Glossary of Terms for Vinyl Siding and Siding InstallationsA B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z S Scarfed Joint: A joint used in plywood siding where edges of abutting sheets are cut in angles to fit snugly and prevent water penetration. Scoring: The process of running a sharp object, such as a utility razor knife, across a siding panel without cutting all the way through. The cut weakens the vinyl panel so it can easily and cleanly be broken off along the scoring line. Sealant: Compounds used to seal joints or fill holes in siding and other materials, i.e. caulk. Shake Siding: Sometimes known as shingle siding, shake siding comes in widths from about 4 inches to 12 inches. It is installed like lap siding, starting at the lowest row, and moving up the wall. The random widths of the shakes provide a distinctive look to the wall. Shims: A thin, waterproof piece of material used to adjust to a plumb, level and square position. Shiplap: A more decorative variation on the clapboard style where the face (or width) of the board is beveled for added dimension and shadow lines. Single Coursing: Single layer of siding shingle or shakes applied with a small overlap along the edge of the course below so that each course is exposed to the elements. Snap-Lock Finish Trim: Trim accessory used to finish off cut edges on siding, as under windows, at eaves, and at porch door locations. May also be used to receive vertical siding at corners and window jambs. The snap-lock design allows siding to be notched and locked into place without face nailing. Soffit: Material used to enclose the horizontal underside space between the end of the roof and the side of the home (eave, cornice, or overhang). Some solid (non-vented) soffit panels may also be used as vertical siding. Square Feet: A term used to denote the total amount of siding material needed for a particular siding job including material waste. Starter Strip: A baseline accessory that is applied to the surface of the home, helping to secure the first set of siding panels to the home. Strapping: A flexible framing material used to even a surface prior to installation. Stucco: A type of water resistant, plaster like siding material made of cement, sand and water. Available in a variety of finishes and styles. i.e. acrylic. |
