F-Channel:  An accessory of vinyl or aluminum siding systems that has a channel that the planks fit into, used around windows and doors to make a weather tight seal.  It resembles an F-shape.

Face:  Refers to the part of the siding panel that is visible once the vinyl has been installed.

Face Nailing:  The act of fastening nails or screws directly onto the “face” side of a panel (instead of using the nail hem slot). This practice is generally not used in siding installation since it prohibits proper expansion and contraction.

Fascia Board or Gutter Board:  An exterior board attached to the ends of the rafters between the roofing material and the soffit overhang along the edge of the roof.  The fascia creates a finished look by covering up the ends of the roof rafters.      

Fascia Cap or Cover:  Covering that goes around the Fascia Board.  Typically aluminum trim coil.

Fiberboard Siding:   This type of siding is made of composite wood material, and is sold under several brand names, including Masonite. Because it is not made of solid wood, it must be installed and maintained properly.

Flashing:  Sheet metal or other material applied under siding to seal and protect the joints formed by different materials or surfaces to provide a weather barrier, preventing leakage between the frame and the wall.

Frieze Board:   Exterior trim on a brick home between soffit and brick that allows for a seamless transition between the two.  Also known as band board.

Furring or Furring Strip:  A wooden or steel framing material, usually 1x2 or 1x3, used to provide an even nailing base.
