Caulking:   A mastic compound for filling joints and sealing cracks to prevent leakage of water and air, commonly made of silicone, bituminous, acrylic, or rubber-based material. Waterproof material used to seal joints at intersections of different materials. Used with different types of siding to join the siding to pre-existing materials.

Channel:   The area of the accessory trim or corner post where siding or soffit panels are inserted. Channels also refer to the trim itself, and are named for the letters of the alphabet they resemble (i.e. J-channel and F-channel).   

Checking:  A crack or split that appears along the grain in wood plank siding as a result of cupping.

Clapboard:  Horizontal, overlapping wood plank siding made from either rectangular planks or tapered planks.

Composition Board:  Siding that is composed of weather resistant compressed wood fibers.
Corner Posts:  In vinyl siding, these are extruded corners with integrated j-channel used to finish seams properly on the inside and outside corners.

Corrugated Siding:  Siding made out of aluminum or plastic and has ridges and valleys.

Course:  A row of horizontal panels, one panel wide, running the length of the house from one side to the other.  For vertical siding, one panel wide from top to bottom.

Cupping:  A warp that develops across the board in wood plank siding.
