Glossary of Terms for Windows and DoorsA B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z N Nailing Fin: An integral or snap on extrusion attached to the main frame of a window or patio door used to secure the unit to the rough opening. These are used when putting windows into a new building. New Construction Window: New construction windows come with an attached nailing fin along the outer frame that’s used to attach the window to the home before the application of the exterior siding. New-construction windows typically are of inferior quality as builders continually try to keep costs low, whereas replacement grade windows are of higher quality to replace the original new construction windows. NFRC: National Fenestration Rating Council provides fair and accurate credible energy and performance ratings for windows and doors. Establishes standards and guidelines for windows for thermal performance, structural integrity, air infiltration, water resistance and wind loads. Night Latch: Latch mechanism on the interior face of the sash that keeps a window at a partially open position for ventilation. Panning: In replacement window work, the outside aluminum trim that can extend around the perimeter of the window opening; used to cover up the old window material. Panning can be installed in the opening before the window, or can be attached directly to the window before installation.
