Glossary of Terms for Windows and DoorsA B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z J J-Channel: Integral extension on the outside of a new construction window that eases installation on siding applications. Jack Stud: Framing members, generally 2x4’s, which form the inside of the window or door rough opening. They run from the sole plate to the header, which is supported by them. Jal Awning: An awning style window with several out-swinging, awning-type windows that pivot near the top of the glass and operate in unison. Jalousie: A window made up of horizontally-mounted louvered glass slats that abut each other tightly when closed and rotate outward when cranked open. Often found in older California stucco type homes. Jamb: Vertical sections of the main frame (the sides of the window). Jamb Depth: Width of the window frame from inside to outside. Jamb Extender: A board used to increase the depth of the jambs of a window frame to fit a wall of any given thickness. Also known as jamb lining or extender jamb. Jamb Liner: Metal or plastic covering the inside surface and head jambs of sliding windows.
