Glossary of Terms for Windows and DoorsA B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z F Fanlite or Fanlight: A half-circle window over a door or window, with radiating grids/bars. Also called circle top transom or arch window. Fenestration: An architectural term referring to the arrangement of windows in a wall. Finger-Jointing: A means of joining individual pieces of wood together to form longer lengths. The ends of the pieces are machined to form a set of interlocking fingers, which are then coated with adhesive and meshed together under pressure. Finish Casing or Finish Trim: Interior trim boards around a window or door unit. Fixed Lite: A non-operating and non-venting window Fixed Panel: An inoperable panel of a sliding glass door or slider window. Fixed Window: A window with no operating sashes. Also called a picture window or fixed lite. Flashing: Sheet metal or other material applied to seal and protect the joints formed by different materials or surfaces to provide a weather barrier, preventing leakage between the frame and the wall. Float Glass: Glass formed by a process of floating the material on a bed of molten metal. It produces a high-optical-quality glass with parallel surfaces, without polishing and grinding. Fogging: A deposit of contamination left on the inside surface of a sealed insulating glass unit due to extremes of temperatures or failed seals. Condensation in between the panes that can't be cleaned. Frame Expander: An extrusion used in retrofit applications that is attached to the main frame to create a smooth, finished look for both the window and the home. French Hinged Door: Hinged door(s) which have wider panel members around the glass. French Sliding Door: A sliding door which has wider panel members around the glass, giving the appearance of a French hinged door. French Window: Two casement sashes hinged on the sides to open in the middle; the sash extends to the floor and serves as a door to a porch or terrace. Fusion-Welded: The process of joining vinyl materials by melting them together with extreme heat (over 500°F). This results in the materials uniting into a one-piece unit.
