Did you know that inefficient windows can lose up to 40% of a home’s heating in the summer and up to 50% of cooling in the winter? These are facts you just can’t afford to ignore.
Because over 75% of your window is glass, the glass is the most important component for energy conservation. The overall efficiency of the glass is dependent on the sum of the parts: the glass, the space between the glass and the spacer system. With World of Windows we build every window using the best, most reliable and energy efficient glass materials available.
Glass with Low-E & Argon Gas (Optional, yet highly recommended)
Maximize the energy efficiency of your windows with the addition of Low-E and Argon Gas. This option is the perfect long-term solution for reducing those ever-increasing utility bills and for increasing your home’s year-round comfort level. Our super energy efficient glass is designed to keep your rooms warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer while protecting your carpet, furniture and window coverings from harmful UV rays.

Intercept™ Warm Edge Spacer System
Window World windows come standard with PPG’s patented Intercept™ Warm Edge Spacer System. This spacer features a unique, one-piece, U-channel design that creates an effective thermal barrier to help reduce conducted heat loss through the window and to create a stronger, more gas retentive barrier over conventional spacer designs.

It all adds up.
Low-E glass improves the energy performance of your window by 24%, over standard insulated glass
Argon Gas, which is a better insulator than normal air, adds another 6%
Intercept™ Warm Edge Spacer System, adds another 5%.
With World of Windows, you’re guaranteed a window system that meets or exceeds the industry’s rigorous standards, and YOURS.
The primary reason for the declining popularity of aluminum replacement windows is that aluminum is a natural conductor of heat and cold, which makes less since in today’s energy conscious day and age…especially for windows. Aluminum is the poorest insulating material you could choose for home energy conservation, since its thermal protection is only about half that of vinyl (even with thermal breaks). Vinyl material makes the absolute most since when it comes to home energy conservation and insulation against the heat and cold. For example, when removing a pan from the oven, would you rather grab a plastic handled pan or a metal handled pan? Same concept for windows, aluminum transfers heat really well, where vinyl does not.
Because vinyl replacement windows are natural insulators, not conductors, vinyl windows are the better choice for reducing residential energy loss. This is the main reason experts note for the decline of aluminum window sales in the United States. Yet there may be more reason: the aluminum window’s frame construction and color coating.
Though aluminum is stronger than vinyl on a material for material basis, an aluminum window is actually a weaker window compared to a fusion-welded vinyl frame and sash window, because aluminum windows are not welded. When homes experience foundation shifting, the frames of the non-welded windows tend to separate and/or cause stress cracks in the glass. Unfortunately, window warranties do not cover problems caused by foundation issues. Another negative for aluminum windows is that their frames are often painted. Scratch an aluminum frame and you’ll see the underlying mil (silver) finish. On the other hand, vinyl windows are the same color throughout. Scratch a vinyl window, no matter how deep, and all you’ll see is the same color as the exterior frame.
Fogged windows are a common problem in most homes today. So what causes this? Fogged windows are typically a result of the glass spacer system failing due to the expanding and contracting of the glass. Changes and variations in outdoor and indoor temperatures cause the glass to expand when heated and to contract when cooled. So for example, in the winter the exterior glass will contract at a higher rate than the inside glass. With that said, if the spacer creating the space between the glass and holding the two pieces of glass in place is unable to move along with the expanding/contracting glass the sealant used to hold the spacer to the glass is required to absorb the movement. Unfortunately, most windows do not come standard with a flexible spacer system. Most insulated glass units (double-pane or triple-pane windows) have aluminum rectangular shaped spacers that are unable to flex and rely solely upon the sealant to absorb the movement of the glass. This is where the problem originates. Over time (like with any sealant) the sealant slowly degrades and pulls away from the glass and the spacer. When this happens, the spacer allows air to seap in. This air, when trapped between the glass, warms due to the sun and causes humidity (also known as fogging). This fogging comes and goes throughout the year leaving a mineral residue between the panes of glass.
So how do I prevent this?
When shopping for replacement windows, make certain the window includes with a flexible spacer system. PPG makes one of the most reliable spacer systems on the market called the warm-edge intercept spacer system. This spacer has a u-shape and it attached to the glass with a flexible rubber material (Butyl) that creates an air tight and water tight seal. You will also want to make certain that your new windows come with a transferrable lifetime warranty against seal failure. Seal failure is one of the most common problems found in insulated glass windows. Don’t be fooled into thinking that just because you are purchasing new windows, they will automatically include this feature. A high-quality spacer system is not standard on most windows. Visit www.worldofwindowsandsiding.com for more information. All World of Window’s vinyl windows come standard with flexible, high-quality spacer systems. World of Windows vinyl replacement windows also include a transferrable lifetime warranty.
According to energy usage studies, Americans lose as much energy through their windows each winter as the amount of oil that is transported by the Alaskan pipeline for the entire year. With that said, just imagine the millions of dollars Americans throw out the window each year – pretty scary huh?
If millions of homeowners across the country banded together and agreed to make just one minor change to help reduce energy loss in their home, we would eliminate millions of tons of carbon release into the atmosphere each year and save money! So where should we start? To make the biggest impact, we need to tackle the area most responsible for home energy loss, our windows. Single -pane windows are twelve- times less efficient than a typical home’s wall and lose as much energy each year as a 75 watt light bulb would consume running seven hours a day for an entire year.
There are several things we can do to reduce energy loss through our windows – that fit any size budget.
Inexpensive and quick fixes:
1. Seal drafty inefficient window sashes with an easily removed caulking (seal and peel). Make sure to leave one window free in case of emergency. For this window, you may want to stuff towels or foam insulation in the gaps to seal.
2. Replace any worn out weather-stripping with newer fin-seal style weather strip. The fin will insulate between the fibers and also reduce dust in the home, helping to improve air quality.
3. If you have storm windows, make sure they too are sealed well. This will help eliminate drafts, as well as help reduce condensation in winter months.
4. If you have curtains and blinds, make sure to keep them closed or if you do not have them, you may want to hang blankets in the window. Make certain they are pinned closed and sealed well against the wall.
5. Build your own storm windows by taping polyethylene plastic over the outside of windows. Keep in mind this won’t be the most attractive option, but it is effective.
Spend some, save a lot methods:
1. Install window tinting. Tinting your home’s windows can help reduce heat entering your home during the summer. Unfortunately, this is less effective during the winter months.
2. Install solar-screens. Like tinting, solar screens are designed to reduce summer heat by shading the window, however they will not reduce heat-loss during the winter months.
3. Strategically plant trees and shrubs to help block the sun’s heat.
4. Install storm windows. Storm windows are really a thing of the past, but if you can still find them, they will help in reducing drafts. Today it makes more since to consider replacing the entire window and frame since the cost may not be much more.
5. Replace your home’s windows. Replacement windows (vinyl windows) are the absolute best method for reducing energy loss in your home. Replacing the window frame with a non-conducive material such as vinyl and utilizing an energy efficient glass package containing Low-E and Argon gas will create optimum energy efficiency in your windows. Vinyl replacement windows are highly recommended for enjoying long-term energy efficiency. Metal windows are highly inefficient due to their heat and cold conductive frames.
Many homes today need new windows, but how do homeowners go about choosing the “right” company to do the work? Most homeowners don’t have the time or the know how to install their own windows, so they must rely on a professional to do the job. The only problem is that all contractors not only claim to be “professional” but they also claim to be the “best”. So you can’t just take the contractor’s word for it.As with any home improvement project, shopping for replacement windows can be a daunting and downright scary task that can result in either a job well done or a never ending nightmare that could cost much more than you ever anticipated. Because your home is in many cases your biggest investment, it’s important for you to do your due diligence and to choose the right company to improve it.
Where to start
You should start by checking with your friends, co-workers and family. Inquire if they know of someone in the window replacement business or if they know of anyone who has recently had their windows replaced. An acquaintance that has had a pleasant experience with a particular window company is typically one of the best and most credible ways to begin your search. If they were happy, then most likely you too will be. Your next best option is to check with the local Better Business Bureau (BBB). The BBB can provide you with a detailed record of customers’ experiences regarding window companies in your town. Only once you have exhausted all of these resources, you will then need to check the more mainstream resources like the phonebook, newspaper, etc. (Important Note: up and until now, each of these resources have been methods by which you initiate contact with the company.) If you are ever contacted directly by a window company via an unsolicited telephone call, interrupted while shopping, or by a door to door canvasser at your home, you may want to take extra caution. These are sales tactics typically employed by high-pressure, over-priced window companies.Just remember, it is important to thoroughly research all of the aforementioned referral sources, whether it be a door to door salesman or your best friend’s referral. After all it is your home we’re talking about!
Do your homework
Once you have chosen at least three different companies to consider doing business with, you will want to begin research. The following checklist should be used:
Your salesperson should be:
Punctual
Polite and well educated in his/her products and all aspects of window replacement
Free of aggressive sales tactics and pricing gimmicks
The average sales appointment should only take 30-45 minutes, there is no need for an appointment to last 4 or 5 hours – unless you want it to!
Be aware of the following high-pressure sales tactics (they are quite entertaining!):
The company is new in the area or in the neighborhood and would like to use your home as the model home for the area.
The company is seeking a model home to place in their new brochure and would like to use your home.
The company is new in the area so they are offering large discounts in order to build a customer base to use in their picture books.
And so on…there are endless combinations to this tactic.
One can never be 100% assured that they are making the right decision, but you can be sure that if you simply do some research, you drastically increase your chances of ending up with a successful home improvement project that you can be happy with for years to come. Good Luck.
Truth is…most homeowners do need new windows!
Unless your home was built within the last 5 years, with Low-E glass in its windows, you are definitely a candidate for window replacement. Why? Because most windows installed prior to 2002 did not have Low-E glass due to lenient city & state energy codes. Today, many states now require Low-E glass in newly built homes and in replacement windows for remodeled homes – and if they don’t, they will soon. Low-E glass is what makes a window efficient by (1) blocking out the heat from the sun during summer months, rather than letting it in. (2) reflecting the heat generated by your furnace back into your home during the winter months, rather than letting it out. Low-E glass means reduced HVAC run time, reduced HVAC equipment wear and tear and most importantly, reduced energy costs.
If you live in the north, your home most likely has the original wood sash windows that are single-pane and have absolutely no weather-stripping. Not to mention, most old wood windows have been caulked and painted shut. This alone is enough reason to replace your windows NOW. Inoperable windows endanger your family’s ability to exit should there be a fire in the home and hinder your home’s ability to breathe (vent). Improper household ventilation exposes your family to poor and sometimes harmful air quality, allergens, mold, and mildew.
If you live in the south, you likely have builders-grade aluminum windows. We all understand that most builders use lower quality products in new home construction in an effort to keep costs down – this includes the windows. Builders know that most home buyers will substitute the energy efficiency of a window in place of its aesthetics. Because of this, unknowingly, homeowners spend thousands of dollars a year in wasted energy.
According to the National Society of Heating and Ventilation Engineers, the top three sources of heating and cooling loss are:
Because windows and doors are the primary source of energy loss and heating/cooling your home accounts for over 45% of your total energy bill, you’ll really enjoy the thousands of dollars you’ll save over the years by simply replacing your windows and doors.
